Heading into the offseason, Jackson Powers-Johnson seemed to be in the driver's seat for the Las Vegas Raiders' starting center job. Dylan Parham appeared to be somebody who could compete with him, but he's entrenched at guard.
However, a new name has emerged who could steal the job from Powers-Johnson. This week during training camp practices, Jordan Meredith has been getting center reps with the starters, while Powers-Johnson has been working with the backups.
While Meredith was working with the starters raised some eyebrows, Powers-Johnson was back with the starters on Monday. That said, it could be a real competition, according to Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
“There might be a little bit of a surprising job fight that’s developing here, and that’s that starting center, of all places, where over the first four days of training camp, and today completed day four of camp, Jordan Meredith and Jackson Powers-Johnson … have split the four days of practice, two practices each, as the first team starting center,” Bonsignore said on the "Vegas Nation" podcast.
“That included today, Sunday, where Jordan Meredith got the bulk, if not the exclusive first team reps as the starting center, and talking to some people in the building … the reality of it, as I’ve been told, is there’s competition everywhere, and apparently it includes starting center.”

It's too early in training camp for Powers-Johnson to get too stressed, but this is a reminder that new head coach Pete Carroll doesn't care about draft status or name recognition when it comes to naming starters. He's going to give every player a chance to compete.
Powers-Johnson was a high second-round pick just a year ago, and he's shown some flashes that would suggest he has All-Pro potential. Meredith is a former undrafted free agent who has been on and off the Raiders' roster since 2022. He came on strong after taking over one of the guard spots last season.
He's a solid player, but he's going to have to be close to perfect in training camp and the preseason to beat out Powers-Johnson.
