Former Rams HC Mike Martz blasts 49ers QB Trey Lance: 'I've never liked him. I still don't like him'

Sunday's Week 1 matchup between the Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers was a disaster for fans of sunny skies and high-octane offensive performances. The Bears pulled off a surprise 19-10 home victory through brutal rainy conditions that resulted in scary numbers for fantasy football players who invested in either offense.

Perhaps if Mother Nature had cooperated, the contest could have been prettier, as it featured a pair of young, mobile quarterbacks who were taken early in the 2021 NFL Draft in Niners third overall selection Trey Lance and Chicago's Justin Fields, who was taken 11th overall. Lance finished the day 13-for-28 with 164 passing yards, 0 touchdowns and one interception (adding 13 carries for 54 yards), while Fields went 8-for-17 with 121 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception, along with 11 carries for 28 yards.

While many people may give the youngsters a pass on the underwhelming outputs due to the weather, former St. Louis Rams head coach Mike Martz clearly is not one of them.

Martz was at the helm of the Rams from 2000 through Week 5 of the 2005 campaign, helping lead the franchise to an appearance in Super Bowl XXXVI. The "Greatest Show on Turf" was stunned in the title game that year however, as Bill Belichick, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots pulled off the upset.

Despite being selected with the third pick last year, Lance spent much of his rookie season backing up Jimmy Garoppolo in San Francisco before earning the starting gig this summer. Despite the tough Week 1 result, Hall-of-Famer (and 49ers legend) Jerry Rice recently voiced his support for the 22-year-old, saying that he should remain QB1.

Martz made headlines in August for high praise of Los Angeles Chargers Pro Bowl quarterback Justin Herbert, comparing him to Tom Brady. Herbert propelled the Chargers to a season-opening win against an AFC West foe in the Las Vegas Raiders, with 279 passing yards, three touchdowns and 0 interceptions, albeit in significantly better weather.
