Former San Francisco 49ers star tight end Vernon Davis spoke out on the recent death of his younger brother, former Indianapolis Colts cornerback Vontae Davis.

Vontae was found dead in his grandmother’s home in Southwest Ranches, FL. Monday. Police said that there was no foul play involved in Vontae’s death.

The two brothers NFL careers started three years apart. Vontae was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 2009 before spending the majority of his career with the Colts. Vernon began his career with the 49ers in 2006.

Former San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis had high praise for his brother, but he remains confused about the entire situation. He said he doesn’t know what to make of it in an article from US Magazine.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better little brother,” Vernon said. “This thing definitely caught me by surprise. I just don’t know what to make of it,” he shared. “I’m leaning on the detectives to figure it out but right now we have no answers. They are going to run tests and they said they’ll get back to us. It could be as long as a month, a month and a half, until we know anything.”

Vontae’s childhood friend, Bobby Maze, also had high praise for the type of person Vontae was in the same US Magazine article.

“To my childhood friend and to my brother Vontae Davis rest in peace. ‘No words can explain how I feel right now,” Maze wrote via Facebook. “You was one of a kind and so full of life. Life will never be the same without my brother. Them FaceTime calls etc damn I wish we could have one more convo.”

Vernon Davis and Vontae Davis were both stars for the San Francisco 49ers and the Indianapolis Colts, respectively

Vernon and Vontae both excelled at their respective positions during their time in the NFL. Vernon was an All-Pro and a Pro Bowler who contributed on the field for 15 years. He helped legendary quarterback Payton Manning win a Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos in 2015.

He ended his career with over 7,500 yards receiving and just under 600 receptions with 63 touchdowns. Vernon was key to the 49ers’ deep playoff runs during the Colin Kaepernick/Jim Harbaugh era.

He is responsible for one of the most memorable 49ers plays in modern history. He made the game-winning catch against the New Orleans Saints in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs.

Vontae was also a multiple-time Pro Bowl selection who was considered one of the best cornerbacks in the league during the peak of his career.

He finished his career with just under 400 tackles and 22 interceptions. He abruptly retired at halftime of game one in the 2019 season when he realized he wasn’t cut out for the NFL game anymore. He said in a US Magazine article that it wasn’t how he pictured his career-ending.

“This isn’t how I pictured retiring from the NFL. But today on the field, reality hit me and hard,” he said at the time. “I shouldn’t be out there anymore.”
