Former Oklahoma Sooners linebacker and fan favorite Danny Stutsman has unsurprisingly jumped into conversations during practice. The fourth-round pick in this year's NFL Draft won't shy away from any competition.
The young linebacker is behind multiple veterans in New Orleans in Pete Werner and Demario Davis. Davis got a day off on Sunday at practice, so Stutsman slotted into first-team reps for the Saints. He did not waste that opportunity. Stutsman picked off Spencer Rattler, who is competing for the starting QB job for Kellen Moore's offense.

Stutsman play-making ability and energy show up on a consistent basis. At minimum, you always know his effort will be up to par and then some. It will be intriguing to see if he can carve out a role for the defense as a rookie. He will most certainly have a special teams impact in year one.
I discussed the potential role for Stutsman and how these sort of plays in camp could lend itself to him being key depth in year one in the pros with Sooners writer Justin Churchill. The Saints need an option like him for their defense.
Stutsman has the opportunity to play big-time snaps in his rookie year, not something that happens to just anyone. But it's unlikely he will be a starter. Now, if an injury or something unfortunate happens, he certainly could be in line for that spot, but for now, Stutsman has some work to do if he wants to see the field. And he's certainly been putting that work in, whether it's been in mandatory minicamp, rookie minicamp, or now training camp. Stutsman is a guy who can be great in coverage, but he wasn't necessarily known for that in college. But, he wasn't really asked to do it as much as he was asked to play the run and shoot gaps. When he was asked to play in coverage, he was pretty decent. To see him making interceptions on the Saints QBs this offseason, and the one he had on Spencer Rattler, is surprising in a way. But it's also not surprising, because Stutsman is a worker, and he will only continue to get better. -- Justin Churchill
