The Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback situation is bad as the 2025 season approaches. That'a a simple statement that many would agree with, and regardless of what Aaron Rodgers decides to do, the long-term strategy at the position will still be in question. The team's quest for a franchise signal-caller has not gone the way it had hoped, and many believe reaching for Kenny Pickett in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft was a huge mistake. The University of Pittsburgh product is preparing to play for his third team in four years after the Philadelphia Eagles traded him to the Cleveland Browns.
Unfortunately for Pickett, the Browns' quarterback depth chart is a complete mess. Consisting of Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson and Pickett, it is the league's most crowded room. All, aside from Watson due to a recovery from two tears of his right Achilles tendon, will be given a chance to compete as offseason activities progress.
The AFC North is a gauntlet of a division, and Cleveland has not had much success since it was formed in 2002. It's not going to get any easier with quarterback controversy, but many expected Pickett to get the nod due to his first-round pedigree and recent small successes as a backup with the Eagles. During Organized Team Activities (OTAs) on Wednesday, however, the signal-caller did not have a great outing.

While Scott Petrak, a Browns reporter for The Chronicle-Telegram, posted a video on X of Pickett throwing a touchdown, the comment about him throwing multiple interceptions is certainly concerning, especially when the pads aren't even on yet. That would imply that his accuracy and decision-making were not up to par with what they are expected to be.
Pickett only has one year to prove his prominence as his fifth-year option was declined by Cleveland. It doesn't help that he was also recently picked on as being the "consensus worst" player at the Browns' OTAs. It's already looking like he will have to backup Flacco, and then, at that point, he might be useless to the organization with two rookies and Watson still on the roster.
The NFL hasn't exactly been what Pickett had hoped it would be. He does have a Super Bowl ring for his one-year stint in Philadelphia, but quarterbacks want to be the ones leading their teams to a Lombardi Trophy, not be the individual watching on the sideline. Being traded in back-to-back offseasons isn't exactly what anyone thought would end up happening after the Steelers took him in the first round back in 2022.
There is plenty of time for Pickett to prove that he should start Week 1 for Cleveland, but there is little room for error when you are competing in a packed positional group. Flacco is a seasoned veteran that won't make too many mistakes in team practices, which is why every snap counts, regardless of it being OTAs, mandatory minicamp, training camp or preseason contests.
Steelers fans have mixed opinions on Pickett, but he has recently seemed to express a little bit of pettiness towards the organization that drafted him. Time will tell which party gets the last laugh, but many from the outside looking in likely think that it will be Pittsburgh.
Ben Roethlisberger retiring at the end of the 2021 season had put Pittsburgh in a compromising position that is still relevant in 2025. The future Hall of Fame quarterback is missed in the Steel City; simply because of his consistency and 18-year run. The modern NFL requires a dominant signal-caller week in and week out to compete for championships. Unfortunately, the Steelers have yet to figure out what the future looks like under center.
