Former Steelers, Titans wide receiver announces NFL comeback after retiring at 27

After being one of several players who shockingly retired in their 20s, a former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver changed his mind and decided to run it back. However, he won’t be with the Steelers for the 2026 season.

On March 5, Lance McCutcheon sent a message on Instagram to thank fans for the support and to announce he would leave the game.

“I just wanted to take the time to thank everyone who has played a part in this process,” McCutcheon wrote.

“I couldn’t have accomplished anything that I did or made it where I did without the help from so many different people. The list of thanks that are owed is never ending, so THANK YOU to everyone out there that helped me accomplish my dream of playing in the NFL.”

Nearly a month after his decision, Lance McCutcheon switched it and decided he wasn’t done yet. Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Wednesday that McCutcheon signed a one-year deal to return to the league. However, he agreed to return to the Tennessee Titans instead of the Steelers.

McCutcheon failed to become the undrafted star some thought he could be. He had stints with the Texans, Jets, Steelers and Titans, all on the practice squad.

The wide receiver led the league in yards during the 2022 season, when he was a member of the Los Angeles Rams. He played in 10 games during that regular season. At 27, he could still prove his value. The Titans have a new project, and they could use McCutcheon to help Cam Ward unlock his potential.
