John Kelly, Jr. is well-traveled in the National Football League.
The former Tennessee Vols running back has spent various amounts of time with a number of different franchises - four to be exact. Kelly, Jr. has been on the active or practice squad roster of the Los Angeles Rams, Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens, and Los Angeles Chargers. He's had two stints with the Browns.
He hopes to earn a second one with the Chargers this fall. The NFL announced Monday that Kelly, Jr. participated in a tryout with the Chargers.
Kelly, Jr. spent a cup of coffee with the Chargers just seven months ago. He was signed to the Chargers' practice squad back on December 2 but was released three weeks later on December 23. He was signed back to the Browns on December 31.
Now a free agent, the former Tennessee ballcarrier will hope to earn a shot to play alongside another former Vol that he did briefly last year - TE McCallan Castles. Castles was on the Chargers' practice squad last year when Kelly, Jr. was signed, so they were teammates in Southern California for a short time.
It will obviously be a long shot for either of them to make the 53-man roster - if Kelly, Jr. even gets signed - but regardless it's an opportunity to show all 32 teams what they can do and earn either a practice squad spot somewhere, or perhaps a roster spot.
We'll find out soon if Kelly, Jr. did enough to warrant a chance from the Chargers, whose training camp began in full back on July 16, when the veterans reported.
