Former Tennessee Vols head coach Butch Jones went semi-viral this week for his reaction to Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce's engagement to pop superstar Taylor Swift.
Jones, who is entering his fifth season as the head coach at Arkansas State, was Kelce's head coach at Cincinnati over a decade ago.
Shortly after Kelce and Swift announced their engagement, Jones met with reporters to preview Arkansas State's season-opener against Southeast Missouri State.
Jones revealed that he spoke to Kelce "last Friday", but the 10-time Pro Bowl tight end didn’t mention to his former head coach that he and Swift were engaged -- though Jones insinuated that Kelce was hinting at the news.
“I cannot answer any of the news that just broke about 20 minutes ago with Travis," said Jones. "I will tell you he called me, I believe it was last Friday on his way into work, and we talked about many things for a long period of time but we did not speak about that. He made some innuendos but I was so focused on our mock game and the Beanie Bowl that I didn’t put two and two together. But really, really happy for them and well deserved. I’m sure him and I will talk here hopefully in the next day or two.”

Kelce called Jones a couple of days before the news of his engagement to Swift went public. The couple, however, were already engaged when he called Jones. Thanks to Kelce's dad, we know that Kelce and Swift got engaged a couple of weeks ago (various clues point to August 10 as the actual date).
Jones essentially learned the hard way that he's not in Kelce's circle of trust -- which shouldn't be a surprise. This news was one of the biggest secrets on the planet for the last couple of weeks. Can you imagine if Butch Jones would've been the one to spoil the surprise?
Yeah, there’s no way Kelce was going to reveal to Butch Jones, of all people, that he and Swift were engaged. That’s why Jones’s suggestion that Kelce was dropping hints comes off as quite cringeworthy -- and ultimately, just another chance for the former Tennessee head coach to name-drop (which Jones does every chance he gets...no one loves to name-drop more than that guy).
