Former Tennessee WR Jauan Jennings appears to be sending a message after not reporting to 49ers OTAs
Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports

Former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Jauan Jennings didn't report to the San Francisco 49ers' voluntary OTAs last week due to the fact that he hasn't signed his restricted free agent tender yet.

The 49ers placed a second round tender on Jennings earlier this offseason which meant that if another team signed Jennings, they'd have to send a second round selection to San Francisco (there were no other teams that tried to sign Jennings and the deadline has now passed...meaning Jennings will play for the 49ers in 2024 unless he's traded).

Jennings, who earned just $2.6 million over the first four seasons of his NFL career, is set to earn $4.89 million in 2024 once he signs his restricted free agent tender.

The former Vol will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2024 season.

And that's (presumably) why Jennings didn't report to OTAs last week.

Jennings undoubtedly wants a contract extension with the 49ers. And he certainly deserves one after what he's provided for the franchise (at a very cheap price) over the last several seasons.

It's unclear, however, if the 49ers are interested in actually giving Jennings an extension. After all, the franchise selected Florida Gators wide receiver Ricky Pearsall in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Pearsall offers a similar skillset -- albeit unproven at the pro level -- as Jennings. The decision to draft Pearsall seems to suggest that San Francisco is planning to let Jennings play on the second round tender (which Jennings will eventually sign...he's not in a position where he can hold out) in 2024 before letting him walk next offseason (and replacing him with Pearsall).

Despite all the uncertainty surrounding Jennings' future in San Francisco, the former Vol isn't letting it stop him from getting prepared for the 2024 season.

Several clips featuring Jennings going through intense offseason workouts away from the 49ers have been posted to social media over the last week.

It certainly feels like Jennings is sending the message that despite being away from the team, he's still dedicating the majority of his time to getting ready for the upcoming NFL season. He's making sure that fans and members of the 49ers' front office are aware that he's not resting on his laurels while skipping voluntary OTAs.

Jennings has had to fight for everything he's received in the NFL. As a late round selection (he was a seventh round pick in 2020), there haven't been many wide open doors for the Tennessee native. So it's not a surprise that when it comes to contract talks, Jennings is once again in a position where he has to fight for what he deserves.

The 49ers would be wise to take care of Jennings. He may not put up gaudy numbers, but he brings a physical element and intensity to San Francisco's offense that can't be easily replicated.
