The New Orleans Saints have a new safety.
Per multiple reports, the team is signing former Kansas City Chiefs safety Justin Reid to a three-year deal worth up to $31.5 million with $22.5 million guaranteed. New Orleans gets a really nice upgrade for their safety room.
Reid, who just turned 28 in February, was born in Prairieville and went to high school in Geismar. After playing collegiately at Stanford, Reid was drafted by the Houston Texans in 2018 as the 68th overall pick in the 3rd Round. He signed with the Chiefs in May 2022 on a three-year, $31.5 million deal and ended up winning two Super Bowls. Tyrann Mathieu and Daniel Sorensen both left the Chiefs, so Reid filled in admirably.
NFL.com had Reid as their 24th-best free agent and their third-highest safety. He graded out as the 20th-best safety out of 170 players on Pro Football Focus with a grade of 76.9.
Earlier on Tuesday saw Will Harris leaving the team for the Washington Commanders, getting a two-year, $10 million deal from them. Tyrann Mathieu also reworked his contract that is incentive based . New Orleans has Jordan Howden and J.T. Gray on the roster as well, and we'd assume Reid will go into the strong safety spot. Of course, with Brandon Staley's new defense, it'll be interesting to see how they use Mathieu.
Justin Reid becomes the second new player for the Saints, as they traded for Davon Godchaux on Monday. New Orleans also re-signed Chase Young and Juwan Johnson. The moves echo what we've suggested and have reported for quite some time now that the team is in a compete mode. Whether they can do that in Kellen Moore's first year remains to be seen.
