As time goes on, accountability and opportunity go hand and hand. While everyone is eager to get a chance to prove themselves, they must also be willing to handle the consequences when they underperform. Especially being measured under a microscope every week. However, with Aaron Glenn looking to change the narrative of the New York Jets , accountability is needed. Prior to Sunday, wide receiver/punt returner Xavier Gipson was given more than his fair share. Alas, after his costly fumble vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers , the New York Jets released the young punt returner. After news of Gipson’s release broke, the question turned to who the Jets can replace him with. Here are four in-house options the New York Jets have to replace Xavier Gipson on punts.

Four Jets Who Can Replace Xavier Gipson

Despite ending in defeat, the new look Jets, led by Aaron Glenn, impressed. Specifically, the offense led by quarterback Justin Fields, running back Breece Hall, and rookie offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand. Scoring over 30 points against an impressive defense like the Steelers is impressive. Alas, New York’s abysmal pass coverage allowed the Steelers to capitalize. One major swing of momentum came after Xavier Gipson’s fumble on a punt return in the fourth quarter led directly to a go-ahead Steelers touchdown.

After preaching about accountability all offseason, Aaron Glenn and the Jets took the proactive measure to release Xavier Gipson. The UDFA wide receiver became a fan favorite after his game-winning punt return touchdown in 2023 vs the Buffalo Bills in the season opener. However, with Sunday’s fumble, his 10th of his career in only three years, New York couldn’t afford to keep him as a liability on special teams. With Gipson’s release, fans wonder who can replace him on special teams. Fortunately, throughout the roster and practice squad, there are already in-house options to replace him with.

Kene Nwangwu

While he’s being evaluated for a hamstring injury on Sunday, the early favorite for punt returner is veteran Kene Nwangwu. A five-year veteran, Nwangwu joined the Jets in 2024 after beginning his career with the Minnesota Vikings. Through his speed, Nwangwu made a big impression in Minnesota with three kickoff return touchdowns between his first two seasons. In addition, Nwangwu earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2022. Last season, Nwangwu made quite the impression in New York, returning a 99-yard kickoff for a touchdown vs. the Seattle Seahawks.

Isaiah Davis

The release of Gipson also creates an opportunity for second-year running back Isaiah Davis. After a storied career at South Dakota State, Davis was selected in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. However, his opportunities are limited as the third running back behind Breece Hall and Braelon Allen. Last year also saw Davis expand his role as a kickoff returner. Through 17 games, Davis returned nine kickoffs for 232 yards. Allowing Davis on the field more can really impact the game if he can learn from Chris Banjo the way Denver Broncos wide receiver Marvin Mims did last season.

Jamaal Pritchett

Few players capitalized during Jets training camp like Jamaal Pritchett. Through three seasons at South Alabama, Jamaal Pritchett was given an opportunity as an undrafted free agent. Through his impressive route tree and solid speed, Pritchett became a fan favorite during the preseason. In addition, he averaged over 15 yards per return during his senior year. While he needs to be elevated from the practice squad, Prichett’s upside is very appealing.

Arian Smith

Our final candidate is Arian Smith, the Jets fourth-round pick from this year’s draft. While dropped passes led to a hit in his draft stock, the Jets weren’t afraid to gamble on the Georgia wide receiver’s speed. With glowing reports during training camp, New York wants to find a way to get Smith involved in the game. While his dropped passes could lead to concerns, Smith’s speed would be useful to allow Isaiah Davis to be kept fresh. With how much New York plans to run the ball this year, keeping Davis healthy will be crucial should Breece Hall or Braelon Allen get hurt. If he can prove himself, Arian Smith might be the guy to help elevate New York’s special teams at this time.
