Four Running Backs the Bears Could Target

For most Bears fans, the 2025 NFL Draft was considered a huge success. New head coach, Ben Johnson felt that he had put a stamp on the football team and drafted players who could make an immediate impact on his offense. However, for Bears fans who had their sights set on superstar rookie running back Ashton Jeanty, they were slightly surprised that General Manager Ryan Poles waited until his very last pick to select a running back, Kyle Monangai, out of Rutgers.

The current Bears running back room looks like this

  • D'Andre Swift: Projected as the starting running back.
  • Roschon Johnson: Listed as a backup.
  • Travis Homer: Another player in the running back room, likely serving a special-teams role.
  • Ian Wheeler: Spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury.
  • Kyle Monangai: Seventh-round rookie and is also a potential backup.

Swift had an up-and-down 2024 campaign, while Johnson and Homer missed several games due to injuries. The Bears have no idea what they have in Wheeler and Monangai. Given the uncertainties around the position, it is rumored that the Bears are looking to add another piece. Let's take a look at a few of the options out there

Nick Chubb

Chubb is a former All-Pro and was teammates with fellow Bear D'Andre Swift during their college days at the University of Georgia. When he was healthy, Chubb could be considered as one of the few difference-making backs in the league. Unfortunately, his last two years have been cut short due to serious injuries. His former team, the Cleveland Browns, appears to be moving on from him after drafting two running backs , including Ohio State star Quinshon Judkins, who fit a similar skill set to Chubb. To his credit, Chubb looks to be recovered from his injuries and even posted a workout video for potential teams.

While Chubb's best years are behind him, the Bears wouldn't need a workhorse type of back. He could rotate with Swift and provide mentorship to Monangai. If the Bears can get creative with their cap space, he could be an interesting option to bring in.

JK Dobbins

With the additions of Najee Harris and Omarion Hampton, Dobbins appears to be the odd man out in Los Angeles. The Chargers are unlikely to attempt to re-sign Dobbins, who is coming off a bounce-back year after suffering yet another torn achilles. Dobbins is almost four years younger than Chubb, so if the Bears deem him fully recovered, he could offer more on-field production. However, Poles' track record of signing players coming off significant injuries would make this selection unlikely as well, especially considering he would be more expensive than Chubb.

Jamaal Williams

Jamaal Williams is another free-agent running back who became a cap casualty with the New Orleans Saints at the end of the season. Unlike the previous two backs, Williams is not coming off a significant injury. The soon-to-be 30-year-old thrived during his season with Ben Johnson in Detroit, where he scored 17 touchdowns during the 2022 season. However, in the two seasons since, he has only two scores. Could he find success again with Johnson? If the Jonah Jackson trade is any indication of the trust Johnson has in his own players, we could see this pairing again really soon.

Kenneth Walker III

Walker is the only player on our list who is not a free agent. The former second-round pick has been a workhorse for the Seattle Seahawks. While Walker has had some absolutely dominant games , he also has missed eight games over the past two years. The Seahawks now find themselves in a situation with a very crowded running back room. Second-year player Zach Charbonnet is primed to take over most of the carries and fits a similar running style to Walker. The Seahawks also have the quicker and more agile Kenny McIntosh, as well as incoming rookie Damian Martinez. With only one year left on his deal, the Seahawks' demands are unlikely to be high. Poles could make a move for a player who would excel in a "running back by committee" situation and would provide a complementary skill set to what the Bears already have with D'Andre Swift.
