Four Titans breakout candidates for the 2024 NFL season
Marc Lebryk-USA TODAY Sports

The 2024 season brings a breath of fresh air to the Tennessee Titans with first-year head coach Brian Callahan now at the helm.

Plenty of talent has followed Callahan to Nashville as has an exciting draft class. As the team looks to find its footing in this new era of Titans football there will surely be a handful of players who are capable of taking a massive leap this fall.

Here are my four breakout candidates for the 2024 Tennessee Titans:

1. QB Will Levis

Any Titans breakout list that does not include QB1 is null and void. Levis spent most of his rookie season running for his life behind one of the worst offensive lines in football. Not only that, but the lack of weapons at wide receiver resulted in a few too many "Screw it, D-Hop is down there somewhere" throws.

Brian Callahan has had plenty of success navigating around subpar offensive lines during his time with the Cincinnati Bengals. Even when Joe Burrow went down with a season-ending injury he helped backup QB Jake Browning lead the league with a remarkable 70.4 completion percentage in 2023. Oh, I almost forgot to mention the additions of an explosive Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd, who brings five years of experience under Callahan, to play alongside DeAndre Hopkins.

2. RB Tyjae Spears

Spears' skillset should fit seamlessly into Callahan's scheme. The Tulane product showed plenty of burst with the ball in his hands as a rookie in 2023. Spears should see an uptick in touches as he figures to receive the bulk of the third-down work even with the addition of Tony Pollard.

Spears was balanced in his production last season totaling 443 rushing yards and 385 receiving yards with three total touchdowns. Though Pollard will take away from a full workload, Spears will have a great opportunity to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in rushing and receiving in his second year in the NFL.

3. DE Arden Key

Key burst onto the scene in Week 1 of 2023 with 1.5 sacks and a tackle for loss against the New Orleans Saints. Unfortunately, Key finished this year with just six sacks and four TFLs.

Key is primed to breakout in 2024 partly due to the fact that the Titans secondary has undergone a full-on facelift. With L'Jarius Sneed and Chidobe Awuzie tasked with locking up opposing receivers Sneed should have plenty of opportunity to boost his numbers with coverage sacks. Plus, his running mate Harold Landry will be back to full strength over a year removed from his ACL surgery and will command plenty of attention on the opposite side of the pass rush.

4. WR Treylon Burks

Burks looks to catch on in Callahan's offense after putting up two lackluster seasons coming after the Titans selected him with the No. 18 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. However, the possibility of Burks working out of the slot, which is where he thrived at Arkansas, provides some optimism around the 24-year-old receiver whose career has been derailed by injury issues.

Callahan prefers size in his slot receivers, which has been on display with the 6-foot-2 Tyler Boyd over their last five seasons together in Cincy. But, with Boyd on the wrong side of 30, Burks will compete for snaps through training camp and beyond. With the talent the Titans brought in at wide receiver Burks shouldn't feel the pressure he has faced over the last two seasons. Playing in a pass-happy system with the chance to leave a new first impression on this coaching staff should motivate Burks to elevate his game in 2024.
