There hasn't been a bigger debate this offseason than whether Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is elite or not (maybe except the Tush Push).
It has divided football fans, with some saying that Saquon Barkley carried the offense all season, while the other side of the argument has focused on Hurts' performance in the postseason, especially the Super Bowl, where he earned his MVP award. This will be a topic of discussion that will go on until Hurts steps on the field in Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys.
FOX Sports shared its top 10 quarterbacks in the NFL, with Hurts coming in fifth. He was behind Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, and Joe Burrow, with the website complimenting Hurts for getting back to the Super Bowl and playing his role in the Eagles' offense in 2024.
"Hurts made his second Super Bowl and won his first ring last season. That being said, he wasn't as prolific of a passer in 2024 as he threw for a career-low (since being named a full-time starter) of 2,903 passing yards and 18 touchdowns. Those numbers were more of a function of the Philadelphia Eagles' successful commitment to their running game, which included Hurts rushing for 630 yards and 14 touchdowns and Saquon Barkley rushing for a career-high 2,005 yards and 13 touchdowns."
Yes, the Eagles were successful at running the football due to Barkley and the outstanding play of the offensive line. Why does Hurts need to apologize for not throwing over 3,000 yards and 20 touchdowns because of that?
Hurts still managed to have a career-high in completion percentage (68.7%), passer rating (103.7), and threw the least amount of interceptions in a season with at least 15 starts with five.
As referenced in a recent Inside the Iggles article, Hurts also had "a career-best 13.4% of his passes being considered "bad throws," alongside 79.1% of his passes being on target, also a career best. His ability to pick up yards on scrambles should be acknowledged, as he averaged a career-high 9.4 yards per scramble. Hurts was getting first downs on all 39 of his scrambles."
If last year showed anything, Hurts has been smart with the football and making sure he is making the best decisions on the field. He's not doing anything to put the team in jeopardy. Hurts is an extension of the offense.
The Eagles will run the same offense in 2025 and continue to prove to the NFL that they have the winning formula and that Hurts is the man to run it back for them.
