Dependable cornerback options were in short supply throughout previous head coach Ron Rivera's four years at the helm. Things look much more promising now for the Washington Commanders, especially where this key position group is concerned.
And one fledgling franchise cornerstone could become the best of the bunch based on the early impressions left at training camp.
The Commanders have five gifted corners to rely upon in 2025. Four-time Pro Bowler Marshon Lattimore looks healthy and explosive. Second-round pick Trey Amos is already looking like a Day 1 starter. Two-time Super Bowl winner Jonathan Jones brings experience, and Noah Igbinoghene is ascending after a decent 2024 campaign.
Washington also has Mike Sainristil, the standout second-year pro who enjoyed a phenomenal rookie season to propel himself into an integral part of the Commanders' long-term plans.
Sainristil was switched to the boundary last season when others failed to meet expectations. The Commanders' recent acquisitions mean he's moving back into the nickel, which is where his physical attributes are best suited. This was highlighted by Zach Selby from the team's website, who thought the former Michigan star could be in line for even better fortunes as an NFL sophomore thanks to his improved supporting cast.
[Mike] Sainristil emerged as one of the team's best defenders in 2024 thanks to his instincts, work ethic and knowledge of the system. He plays bigger than his 5-foot-10, 182-pound frame, which helped him hold his own against receivers like A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. Despite playing as a perimeter cornerback -- he was supposed to be a nickel player -- he recorded 93 tackles and led the team with two interceptions. Based on how he performed this week, Sainristil is on track for an even better season in Year Two.
Sainristil's contribution went completely under the radar compared to his draft classmate, Jayden Daniels. That doesn't mean it was any less important, and the imposing start made at training camp suggests this was just the start of a potentially glittering career in Washington.
The Commanders won't be entirely dependent on Sainristil, and one could make a strong case for Lattimore holding the key to Washington's fortunes. However, the competitive fire and athletic gifts make the versatile defensive weapon a force that cannot be ignored.
He's not a household name just yet. But if Sainristil makes the strides anticipated during his second campaign in a professional environment, he'll achieve that objective with minimal fuss.
And the better Washington's chances will be. Make no mistake about that.
