Free-agent WR Corey Coleman suspended for six games?

Wide receiver Corey Coleman has encountered the latest setback in his journey toward a potential NFL comeback if he is, in fact, interested in resuming his career.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported on Tuesday that Coleman has been suspended for the first six games of the 2021 season because of a violation of the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

The 26-year-old was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft but helped orchestrate a trade to the Buffalo Bills in August 2018. He failed to catch on with the Bills and New England Patriots but later found a second life for his career with the New York Giants. As Paul Schwartz documented for the New York Post, Coleman tore his ACL in the Giants' first training camp practice of 2019 and missed that entire season.

Per Ed Valentine of Big Blue View, the Giants released Coleman from their practice squad this past November. Coleman, who hasn't registered a regular-season stat since 2018, has 61 career receptions for 789 yards and five touchdowns.

Unlike Josh Gordon, another former Browns draft acquisition who recently went back on indefinite suspension amid his battle with substance-abuse issues, Coleman has neither flashed Hall of Fame talent nor produced Pro-Bowl-worthy numbers. It's possible the football community has seen the last of Coleman in the NFL.
