Free Agents The Packers Could Still Be Targeting

The first wave of free agency is over. The biggest deals and biggest impact players are off the board. So what’s next for the Green Bay Packers? While their attention is certainly shifting to the draft, there are still a handful of players out there that could make the difference for next season.

While none of these players ae likely to be pro bowlers, they could provide a necessary level of depth that a team could need. Packers fans saw last year what can happen when a team simply runs out of guys.

Like many teams this offseason, the Packers have made moves with 2027 in mind. Deals signed by Willis, Doubs, and the Walkers will likely net the Packers an additional picks in the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th rounds. With the 2027 draft considered one of the deeper ones in recent history, it makes sense to limit what you spend in FA to maintain those picks.

Still, this is a team with title aspirations. If another player or two at positions of need could make a real difference, I expect the Packers to still make a move.

The Packers Absolutely Should

Campbell may very well retire this offseason, but even at 39 he still showed he could play last year in a bad situation in Arizona. He would provide some much needed size on the interior of a thin defensive line. DJ Reader is coming off an injured and inconsistent season with Detroit, but like Campbell would provide some much needed depth.

Travon Diggs is a player the Packers had in the building, and maybe he didn’t leave a great impression in the building. On the field for a very limited time however he played decently. At this point in free agency you can likely sign him to a very cheap prove it deal, and the Packers could definitely use help at corner.

As for Clowney, I’ve wanted him in Green Bay for the past several years. He came off the couch last year for the Cowboys last season and still managed to accrue 8.5 sacks. He would provide depth until Parsons is ready to return, and could even put up bigger numbers than last season if he had the chance to play across from Parsons.

Depends on the Price

  • AJ Epenesa
  • Cameron Jordan
  • Haasan Reddick

All three of these guys would be players I’d look at for the same reason Green Bay should go after Clowney. Until Micah Parsons returns, edge for Green Bay right now is basically Lukas Van Ness and a bunch of second year guys. The draft could see another few added to the mix, but any of these three could help bolster the unit until Parsons is ready. And like Clowney would likely benefit from playing opposite of him.

Probably Shouldn’t But…

  • David Njoku
  • Darrin Waller
  • Kevin Zeitler

Njoku and Waller both would serve as depth for a returning Tucker Kraft and an underwhelming Luke Musgrave. The Packers were reportedly interested in Waller when he was with the Raiders, and while that time is long past, Waller looked surprisingly spry for the Dolphins last season.

Zeitler is likely on the tail end of his career, but if Green Bay intends on keeping Sean Rhyan at center, then the RG spot is currently only helmed by converted tackle Anthony Belton. Belton struggled at times in the role, and Green Bay may want to take a flyer on a guy that knows better than most how to play the position.
