Falcons head coach Raheem Morris spoke about the recent completion of rookie minicamp. He had very high praise for one undrafted free agent.
Undrafted player Cobee Bryant was thought to be a third-day selection in this year's NFL Draft, but hearing his name called never came to be. Instead, Bryant signed as an UDFA with the Atlanta Falcons a couple of weeks ago. It may have been a shock to many that Bryant wasn't drafted, but Raheem Morris had little doubt that Bryant would make his way to Flowery Branch.
Morris would tell reporters, "I knew what he can do. I knew what he was capable of," Morris told reporters at rookie minicamp. "Whoever we were competing with basically didn't have a chance.” Bryant spent his college career with the Kansas Jayhawks. He wasn't an unknown prospect trying to get signed somewhere for an opportunity. He was a well-known prospect on teams radar, but for whatever reason, fell short of being selected in the draft. Now, Bryant's destiny is solely in his hands.
According to Morris, Bryant seems to be making the most of every opportunity, saying, “Cobee is the most famous undrafted player I've ever been around. I mean, my kids know him," Morris said at Falcons rookie minicamp. "It's unbelievable, all the stuff that he has and the accolades. But, when you go back and watch the tape, you're not shocked that he's well known."
Morris would also say, "The amount of players that he's played against and the guys that he's able to compete against when you watch his tape is exciting. We were fortunate enough to be able to bring him here on a 30-day visit and to get a chance to meet with him and get around him and really find some real interest and be able to grow."
By not drafting an outside cornerback, the Falcons were able to recruit Bryant pretty heavily. If you base things on performance at the position alone, the Atlanta Falcons will need to take a long, hard look at Bryant to make the active roster. He is very athletic and instinctive to the football, not to mention a chip on his shoulder due to not being drafted.
