The Jacksonville Jaguars have just shockingly released wide receiver Gabe Davis. This move comes weeks after drafting standout college two-way player Travis Hunter. The Jaguars’ plans make Hunter their featured number one wide receiver. Davis’s release happened after signing him to a $39 million contract last offseason.

The Jacksonville Jaguars released Gabe Davis on Wednesday, May 7, 2025. Jacksonville is releasing the 26-year-old receiver after just one season. Last off-season, the team signed Davis to a three-year deal worth $39 million. The Jaguars signed Davis after losing their other standout receiver, Calvin Ridley, in free agency a year ago.
Davis joined the team last year after spending his first four professional seasons with the Buffalo Bills. The Davis signing was supposed to be a big deal for the team and quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Bringing in Davis was to add the element of his big-play ability and bolster the receiver room. While Davis played with the Bills for four seasons, he averaged 683 receiving yards and seven touchdowns per season.
The Jags’ signing of Davis was supposed to unlock his full potential. While playing in Buffalo, he would show moments of brilliance but was ultimately inconsistent. Jacksonville’s ultimate goal was to pair him with Lawrence and put him in a position to be the number one wideout.
Davis grew in popularity after his 2022 divisional round game in Kansas City. During that game, Gabe Davis had eight catches for 201 yards and four touchdowns in a loss. Following that game, many believed he would blossom into a superstar player. After two solid years with the Bills, he still hit free agency and signed with the Jaguars.
The Jacksonville Jaguars wanted to add big-play threats to their offense for quarterback Trevor Lawrence; however, Gabe Davis failed to put up big numbers. Davis’s season ended due to a knee injury after only 10 games. In those 10 games, Davis caught 20 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Far from the splash play threat, the Jaguars thought they were getting.
The Jaguars wanted to save their drowning wideout room, which took significant steps forward because of their rookie draft pick, Brian Thomas. In his rookie season, Thomas caught 87 passes for 1,287 yards and 10 touchdowns. His outstanding play led to his selection for the Pro Bowl. The room’s depth also deepened when the Jaguars recently drafted Travis Hunter. With Davis and Hunter together, the Jaguars pose for an explosive new-look offense.
Davis should have a good market, as he is believed to have fully recovered from his new injury. Teams could be drawn to his ability to make explosive plays. While Davis hasn’t turned into a consistent go-to player, he is still only 26 and, on the right team, could blossom into a great player.
