Excited Cleveland Browns fans want rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders to be their starter after he played well in the club's preseason opener at the Carolina Panthers on Friday.
However, The Athletic's Ted Nguyen and the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Lance Reisland each suggested that Friday's game film shows why Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski is in no rush to play Sanders in the regular season over veteran Joe Flacco.
"There were a few times when he held on to the ball and retreated too far backward," Nguyen said about Sanders. "One of those plays was a fourth-and-1 in which you might as well try to make something happen; however, he ran backward about 10 yards, which is a cardinal sin. ...On a sack in the third quarter, the Panthers sent a safety blitz from depth, and Sanders had plenty of time to throw the ball away but took a sack. These plays are notable because they littered his college film and were one of the big reasons he dropped in the draft."

Nguyen noted that "Sanders made the most of his opportunity" and "looked poised" as he completed 14-of-23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the 30-10 victory over Carolina. That said, Reisland pointed out that the first-year pro "misread" the Panthers' defense on the previously mentioned fourth-down play.
"After the misread," Reisland continued, "Sanders compounds the error by holding onto the ball and scrambling instead of throwing it away or giving his receiver a chance to make a play."
Sanders took an FBS-high 94 sacks over his final two college seasons. Multiple plays from the Panthers matchup indicate that he would be responsible for far too many avoidable drive-killing sacks if he went up against a first-team defense during Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7.
Perhaps the best news regarding Sanders' development is that Stefanski reportedly won't "be swayed by public opinion" coming off one preseason game. As of Tuesday morning, FanDuel Sportsbook continued to list Flacco as a -310 betting favorite to start against Cincinnati. To compare, Sanders was a +1060 betting underdog to get the nod for that game.
Sanders should receive ample opportunity to show what he learned when Cleveland continues its preseason against the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday. Sanders and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel could get the majority of the reps if the Oregon product isn't still slowed by the hamstring injury that kept him out of the Carolina game.
