Garrett Wilson shares thoughts on Jets trade-deadline acquisition

Amid the rubble of the New York Jets' trade-deadline fire sale, wide receiver Garrett Wilson believes the team may have found a gem.

On Thursday, two days after the Jets shockingly traded two-time first-team All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts for two future first-round picks and wide receiver Adonai "AD" Mitchell, Wilson spoke highly of his recently added teammate.

"He's a dog," the 2021 Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year stated. (h/t NY Post)

"I don't think he can [help]. I know he can," Wilson confidently added. "He's a big body, he can go up and get the ball, make it hard to tackle. Then you watch him move and you're like, 'Oh, he doesn't move like his size.' He's very in control of his body."

Garrett Wilson praise of AD Mitchell should give New York Jets a glimmer of hope

Mitchell (6-foot-2, 205 pounds) was selected in the second round (No. 52 overall) by the Colts in the 2024 NFL Draft. In 25 career games (eight starts), he has 32 receptions, 464 yards. Mitchell, 23, is still seeking his first career touchdown, although he came close earlier this season before infamously fumbling the ball at the goal line in a seven-point loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

A change of scenery was necessary. The Colts have enough pass-catchers in wideouts Michael Pittman Jr., Alec Pierce and Josh Downs and tight end Tyler Warren. NFL leading rusher Jonathan Taylor also demands at least 20 touches a game, which left Mitchell without a pathway to a meaningful role.

He'll have a much better chance of latching on in New York, which outside of Wilson doesn't have a receiver who intimidates defenses. Entering Week 10, Josh Reynolds is second on the team among wide receivers in receptions, notching 11 in five games.

After being acquired mid-week, Mitchell might not have an immediate impact. But he should have plenty of opportunities the rest of the season to lock down a spot as a starter heading into 2026.
