Geno Smith contract contains team-friendly dimensions

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith turned hisNFL Comeback Player of the Year performance from last season into what was originally reported to be a three-year, $105 million contract with the team this week, with $40M guaranteed. Turns out those numbers were off by just a touch.

According to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, Smith actually received $27.3 million in fully guaranteed cash. The other $12 million or so won’t become guaranteed until February of 2024. The tangible offshoot of this aspect of the contract is that Seattle could theoretically opt to release Smith ahead of the deadline, turning the deal into a modest one-year, $28 million contract. The total value also turned out to be $75 million once the final details were released.

Even after Smith’s contract was made public earlier this week, reports continued to swirl that the Seahawks still will seriously consider selecting a quarterback high in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Seattle boasts two first-round picks (fifth and 20th overall) for Day 1 upcoming. Assuming Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud are off the board when that fifth pick comes up, Anthony Richardson (Florida) and Will Levis (Kentucky) would represent upside options for general manager John Schneider at signal-caller, should the team so choose to follow that route.
