As expected, quarterback Geno Smith’s on-field return in Seattle was over quick.
In Thursday’s game between the Las Vegas Raiders and Seattle Seahawks, Smith completed one of three passes for 15 yards before calling it a night. Of course, Seahawks fans did not take too kindly to Smith’s departure this offseason. However, very few stepped over any lines, and it can just be shrugged off as fans not liking their team’s business decisions.
A couple of fans, however, made their displeasure with Smith more clear, and the quarterback responded in a shocking manner.
According to For The Win’s Charles Curtis, a fan caught the quarterback’s ire when he held a sign saying “BIGGER BUST – GENO OR JAMARCUS RUSSELL.”
Comparing a two-time Pro Bowler like Smith to one of the worst NFL draft busts of all time is a stretch, and the quarterback let the fan know by giving him the double middle fingers.
Currently, there is no video footage circulating at the moment, meaning a well-timed photograph is the only proof that the exchange occurred. Despite the fan’s insinuation being well out of line, the NFL will not take kindly to Smith’s unflattering response to the situation. The Raiders do not want the Pete Carroll era starting out with a punishment to their quarterback, so the team will likely hope Smith gets away with little more than a slap on the wrist and maybe a fine.
The fiery competitive spirit Smith has can do great things for the Raiders, but hopefully it is more channeled towards the action on the field than what happens off of it.
