Geno Smith expected to improve in an unexpected way in 2025

When Geno Smith was named starting quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks in 2022, fans were skeptical about the decision.

Despite being drafted in 2013, Smith had never really shown the talent that lead to him being such a highly-touted prospect on a consistent basis. That all changed in Seattle, where Smith emerged as a viable starting quarterback and enjoyed the best stretch of his career so far. In March, Smith was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders for a third-round pick, reuniting with head coach Pete Carroll and expected to lead the charge for a new-look offense.

Smith comes in with at least some level of expectation, hoping to give the Raiders the stable play at quarterback they have lacked over the past couple of seasons.

In what ways can Raiders fans expect to see Smith improve in 2025?

Discussing how quarterbacks on new teams would fare in 2025, NFL analyst Kevin Patra said Smith would perform better with the Raiders, but not necessarily in terms of raw statistical output.

“When stating that I expect better numbers from Smith, I don’t think he’ll pass for another career high in yardage, as I’m anticipating the Raiders to be more balanced,” Patra wrote. “However, I do expect Smith’s efficiency numbers to improve. His -.02 EPA per dropback should improve while he cuts down on the backbreaking INTs. And the 53.8 QBR from 2024 should get back into the 60s, where it was when he was with Carroll.”

Last season, while Smith did set career highs in completion percentage (70.4%) and passing yards (4,320), there were also some issues that flared up in Seattle.

The Seahawks had one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL last season, leading to struggles on offense. Smith was one such player who struggled with the problems up front, leading to a career-high 15 interceptions in 2024. If the Raiders hope to improve like many around the league expect them to, Smith has to do a better job of taking care of the football.

Fortunately, the Raiders look to have the infrastructure around him to make that happen.

“The weaponry surrounding Smith is a fascinating collection,” Patra continued.

“Tight end Brock Bowers is a No. 1 target. First-round running back Ashton Jeanty should make his life easier. The WR crew has some questions, but Jakobi Meyers is underrated and second-round pick Jack Bech brings a physical style. If Smith is protected better than he was last year, he can dramatically improve a Raiders offense that has been stuck in the mud for the past two years.”

With a more balanced offense and Carroll already knowing his strengths, Smith looks primed to leave the issues of last season in the past.
