Geno Smith getting more first-team QB reps than Drew Lock for Seahawks

Back in May, Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll make it known that veteran quarterback Geno Smith, who filled in last fall when Russell Wilson was banged up, was "automatically" ahead of 2019 second-round draft pick Drew Lock in the competition to name Wilson's replacement following the March trade with the Denver Broncos that landed Seattle Lock.

It appears the Seahawks' depth chart hasn't changed as of the third day of August.

Per Kevin Patra of the NFL's website and Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Smith has received more first-team practice reps than Lock this summer. Seahawks offensive coordinator Shane Waldron offered some insight into why that's thus far been the case.

"We have a plan there," Waldron explained. "There are also a lot of different things with the walkthroughs and everything we have going. There have been a few scenarios out here where there has been some overlap. We are just going with our plan here of evaluating those guys and evaluating everything that they are doing. Right now, the way that it has worked out, Geno has been a little bit more with the ones than Drew, but there is some mixing and matching going on and we will continue to do that throughout camp and until the time that we make the decision."

Asked when a final decision may come, Waldron suggested it will only be announced shortly before the Seahawks face Wilson and the Broncos in their regular-season opener on Sept. 12. Seattle begins the preseason at the Pittsburgh Steelers on Aug. 13.

The Seahawks continue to be linked with San Francisco 49ers veteran Jimmy Garoppolo. If, as is widely expected, Seattle and other clubs wait for the Niners to release Garoppolo in late August, the 30-year-old likely wouldn't be ready to start for any new employer before Week 2 at the absolute earliest.
