Geno Smith Makes Surprising Admission About Seahawks Departure

The Seattle Seahawks moved on from quarterback Geno Smith during the 2025 offseason.

They dealt Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. They felt it was time to move on after they couldn't agree to terms on a new contract.

The Seahawks signed Sam Darnold in free agency as Smith's replacement after Smith signed a two-year $75 million extension with the Raiders. The deal could be worth up to $85 million.

Smith recently spoke to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer and according to Breer, the Seahawks' offer was well below where Smith wanted to be in AAV (average annual value) that Smith and his representatives didn't even counter.

He told Breer that it wasn't just about the money but it still played a factor.

“Obviously, they have young guys in the building that they want to step up and be leaders, and they got a new head coach last year. And Mike was good for us, and I really enjoyed being with him for that season. But again, man, when you’re talking about business, and you’re talking about a quarterback who wants not only to get paid— every player wants to get paid, but to be respected, that’s the most important thing. It’s the respect factor," Smith told Breer.

Smith landed in a good spot and will be the Raiders' starting quarterback for the foreseeable future. He was with the Seahawks for five seasons and helped them get to the playoffs one time as a starter (2022).

He finished that season with 4,282 yards through the air, 30 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He finished the 2024 season with 4,320 yards through the air, 21 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions.

The Raiders finished the 2024 season with a 4-13 record and will have the sixth overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
