Geno Smith responds to reactions on sideline controversy

Over the weekend, new Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Geno Smith found himself in some hot water.

Coaching the seven-on-seven youth football team the South Florida Express, Smith got into a verbal altercation with a fan from the sidelines. With the game being broadcast on NFL Network, Smith’s tirade caught the attention of national outlets, with some even suggesting the quarterback face punishment from either the Raiders or the NFL. It is expected that no such thing will happen to Smith, but it does provide a level of controversy to what has otherwise been a drama-free offseason for the Raiders.

Taking to social media, Smith set the record straight on his comments.

This is not the first time when Smith’s competitive side has shown through his comments.

On his personal X account, Smith made a post saying that the media was blowing what he said well out of proportion, saying he was just participating in the game he loves.

Smith also poked fun at his own comments in a series of other posts, with one saying that he ‘heard worse at family reunion spade tables.’

Smith’s new teammate defensive end Maxx Crosby also chimed in, defending his quarterback from the backlash.

It is far from the first time that Smith has been fired up at the end of a game. After spoiling Russell Wilson’s return to the Seattle Seahawks in a 17-16 win over the Denver Broncos in 2022, Smith fired back at his critics with one of the most iconic lines in recent NFL history.

“They wrote me off but I ain’t write back though,” said Smith in the postgame interview.

The fire that Smith has inside has lead to wins on the football field, and the Raiders are hoping for more of the same.
