Geno Smith’s ‘Likeliest Outcome’ for 2024 Revealed by ESPN

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith surprised many when he pushed the franchise along quicker than expected in the aftermath of the Russell Wilson era last season.

After leading the team to the playoffs in his first year as the starter en route to being named to the Pro Bowl, the Seahawks thought they were on a good thing with Geno and signed him to a three-year, $75 million deal.

But it has an out in 2024 and after an up-and-down season in 2023 along with a change in head coach and offensive coordinator, could Seattle move on from Smith?

ESPN isn't sold on him returning.

"Conventional wisdom suggests the likeliest outcome is the Seahawks rolling with Smith for at least another year and seeing whether a new coaching staff/offensive system will coax steadier play out of him in 2024, the kind that typified his first half of 2022 and his finish to '23," ESPN writes. "But that doesn't feel like a sure thing.

"Smith is coming off a mixed-bag of a season. He was historically clutch in the fourth quarter and posted the NFL's best QBR over the final six weeks, a span that includes the two games he missed with a groin injury. But even with that strong finish, his production dipped across the board from 2022, including 10 fewer touchdown passes (though also two fewer interceptions) and a completion rate that fell from 69.8% to 64.7%. Just as significantly, he no longer has Carroll -- perhaps his biggest supporter in the organization -- calling the shots."

Smith couldn't replicate his Pro Bowl efforts from a year ago, and as such, Seattle stuttered at times this season. After starting the year 6-3, things wobbled to the tune of a four-game losing streak which made making the postseason tough.

There can be no denying that when things click for Smith and the Seahawks offense, they looked good. So it will ultimately come down to whether the new head coach will want Geno under center in their first year with the organization.

Stability in the NFL is hard to come by. Should Seattle stick with Smith, it will be his third year as the starter and with an offense that has D.K. Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Kenneth Walker, Noah Fant, and Zach Charbonnet, the Seahawks could easily bounce back next season.

While there is a little bit of mystery surrounding whether Smith will return, it does seem like the best outcome, at least for the upcoming season.
