Get to Know the Dolphins’ Newest Starting Quarterback

The Miami Dolphins’ Monday Night Football loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers could go down as Tua Tagovailoa‘s final game as the team’s starting quarterback. ESPN’s Adam Schefter came out with a bombshell report on Wednesday that, with Miami now eliminated from playoff contention, it will bench Tagovailoa in favor of rookie signal-caller Quinn Ewers.

Ewers will make the first start of his NFL career against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, so who is he? Well, he was drafted by the Dolphins with a seventh-round pick back in the 2025 NFL Draft after three seasons starring as the University of Texas at Austin’s quarterback. He showed incremental growth across his stint with the Longhorns and led the SEC conference in passing touchdowns (31) in his third and final season of college football.

But the 22-year-old has spent the overwhelming majority of his rookie NFL season so far warming the bench and watching Tagovailoa do a shoddy job of heading the Dolphins’ offense. Ewers has appeared in just one game this season, and that was in an October loss to the Cleveland Browns. He completed five of his eight passing attempts and totaled 53 passing yards in an embarrassing 31-6 blowout loss for Miami.

It remains to be seen if Ewers is NFL material, but even if it looks like the bright lights are too bright for him on Sunday, it’s not like Miami is playing for a whole lot at this stage of the season. As mentioned, the Dolphins are firmly out of the playoff race following their loss to the Steelers and have missed out on a berth in back-to-back seasons.

Starting Ewers feels like a low-risk, high-reward move overall, as there will be little, if any, negative ramifications for Miami this season if he doesn’t fare all that well. Though if he does play at a high level, maybe he will convince the Dolphins that they have their new quarterback of the future.
