The San Francisco 49ers suffered arguably their biggest injury of the season when Nick Bosa tore his ACL in Week 3’s win over the Arizona Cardinals. Despite a seemingly endless barrage of ailments, the team currently sits at 3-0 and should have quarterback Brock Purdy back in the lineup this week. Kyle Shanahan is a fantastic coach who knows how to get the most out of his talent, but even he knows this team could use another edge rusher.
In a recent interview, Shanahan spoke about trying to find a trade partner following the Nick Bosa injury.
“There’s got to be trade options that make sense for you and another team, but you can’t just do that stuff just do it,” Shanahan said. This shows the 49ers are interested in finding outside help, and looking across the league, one of the best fits is New York Giants edge defender Kayvon Thibodeaux.
A first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Kayvon Thibodeaux has looked like the odd man out on the New York Giants depth chart since the team selected Penn State’s Abdul Carter back in April. With Carter complementing Thibodeaux and Brian Burns, New York entered the season with three starting-caliber pass rushers.
There is no such thing as too many reliable pass rushers, and, in the short term, the Giants would be happy to carry three players who can make a difference at such an important position. However, great pass rushers cost money, and Thibodeaux will earn a large paycheck when he hits the open market. Seeing as Burns already received a massive extension and Carter is under team control for five seasons, the Giants should be willing to trade Thibodeaux if their season unravels.
Perhaps rookie Jaxson Dart can turn this team around, but the Giants are 0-3 and long shots for the postseason. Seeing as the 49ers desperately need a pass rusher following the Nick Bosa injury, the two sides should be able to work out a deal. Shanahan and the 49ers can get a good player to help them finally win that elusive Super Bowl, while the Giants receive a draft pick that can help rebuild a poor offensive line and keep Dart upright for the duration of his time with the team.
