Giants Are Best Fit For Marcus Peters In NFL Free Agency

General manager Joe Schoen has done a wonderful job in his first two offseasons on the job with the New York Giants. The mess that he inherited from the last regime led by Dave Gettleman was brutal. 

New York was in salary cap hell and the roster was lacking depth across the board from poor drafts and free agent deals. But, after 14 months on the job, the Giants look like a totally different team.

The first year on the job was all about managing the salary cap. The Giants couldn’t make any splashes in free agency as they didn’t have the cap space for it. Tough decisions were made when it came to veterans being released and contracts being restructured. His discipline led to the team having money to spend this offseason.

The Giants did well addressing some holes on the roster. Linebacker Bobby Okereke of the Indianapolis Colts was their biggest splash, as he agreed to a four-year, $40 million deal to shore up the second level of their defense. Rakeem Nunez-Roches was added to the defensive line rotation as another run-stuffer.

The defense should be better with those two players, but there is still some work to be done on that side of the ball. The secondary, which lost versatile safety Julian Love to the Seattle Seahawks, needs some depth at cornerback. One player who Bill Barnwell of ESPN believes would be the perfect fit for Big Blue is Marcus Peters.

The fit is a logical one as Peters has plenty of experience playing for Giants’ defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. He thrived in his system when the two were part of the Baltimore Ravens and would make for an excellent No. 2 option opposite of Adoree’ Jackson.

Peters is known for his playmaking ability, which the Giants lacked last season. They intercepted only six passes on the season; 2022 was the first time in his career Peters didn’t intercept at least three in the year.

While he is susceptible to allowing a big play or two given his style of play, Peters would be a great addition to this secondary. His knowledge of the system will make for a seamless transition and his ball-hawking abilities would be a boost for a defense that struggled to force turnovers.
