About a minute ago, New York Giants edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux was seen as the fifth-best player in his NFL Draft class.
About a half-minute ago, Kayvon was racking up 11.5 sacks in the 2023 season.
And today? He's still just 25 ...
And a source tells GiantsCountry.com that New York is "shopping'' the budding star while looking for a pre-NFL Draft trade.
Why?
It is being argued that fellow D-linemen Brian Burns and Dexter Lawrence will soon be looking for new contracts, making Kayvon too expensive too keep.
There is also the argument that if the Giants use the No. 3 overall pick in this draft on Penn State edge Abdul Carter, Thibodeaux would be expendable in that way.
And there is this: Thibodeaux’s is subject to a major Giants decision as they are not sure if they want to pick up his fifth-year option.
That's a bad sign ... and a reason to "shop'' the player in search of a trade partner.
There are issue there, of course, too.
In Detroit, there is a Lions website suggesting the Giants accept pick No. 102 - in the third round - for Thibodeaux.
FOX Sports, meanwhile, suggests a trade "could bring multiple premium draft picks in return.”
The truth? It is early enough in this process that both of those wildly different scenarios are simply guesses.
And maybe not very good ones.
What does New York stand to gain from a Thibodeaux deal? How many good D-linemen is too many? What's the hurry to trade him for nothing?
Thibodeaux was hurt much of last year and still has 21 sacks in three seasons. He is still the talent who was once the fifth-best prospect in his class.
New York is calling. And New York is taking calls.
It's a story to watch between now and next weekend, but this much is so: This franchise might not want to "afford'' Thibodeaux moving forward.
But this franchise also can't afford to give away a good player for nothing.
