Giants beat writer responds to Drew Lock, Tommy DeVito chatter

For the mailbag portion of an article published on Wednesday, New York Giants beat writer Paul Schwartz seemed to pour cold water over the idea that 2023 undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito could win the team's primary backup quarterback job over Drew Lock this summer.

"It is true that Lock was inconsistent during organized team activity practice No. 3," Schwartz explained. "But Lock is in the early stages of his acclimation to the Giants, he is just now learning the offense and he probably does not know the names of some of the guys he is working with in the huddle."

The contract Lock signed with the Giants in March reportedly included $3M in incentives related to playing time and performance. He currently is penciled in atop the depth chart as starter Daniel Jones recovers from the torn right ACL he suffered on Nov. 5, but Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post suggested this week that DeVito could enter September as the club's QB2 if Lock "doesn’t clean up his nonchalant fundamentals quickly."

Schwartz indicated the backup gig remains Lock's to lose heading into June.

"Lock, 27, was signed to serve as the backup quarterback to Daniel Jones unless Jones is not ready to play Week 1 following knee surgery," Schwartz continued. "In that case, the Giants believe Lock can start a game or two and give the team a chance to win. These snippets of practice the media is allowed to view this time of year is all there is to go on. Making too much of some errant throws from Lock in the spring seems unnecessary."

As Michael Eisen of the Giants website shared on Monday, Jones insisted earlier during organized team activities that he will be cleared for contact before New York opens the upcoming regular season with a home game against the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 8. 

Chatter about Lock possibly competing with Jones from training camp through the preseason has mostly quieted down, but those thinking Lock is in danger of losing his spot to DeVito may want to pump the brakes until the quarterbacks face an opposing defense in an exhibition game.
