The New York Giants held out hope for Cam Skattebo to return to the scene of his gruesome season-ending lower leg injury. But in the end, his hamstring injury was too much to overcome.
The Giants ruled out their starting running back for their Week 9 game against the Philadelphia Eagles, one of seven New York players unable to suit up for the divisional showdown.
In addition to Skattebo, cornerbacks Colton Hood and Nikko Reed and offensive linemen Marcus Mbow and Josh Sills were inactive. Tight end Thomas Fidone II, and defensive lineman C.J. Okoye were also ruled out.
The Giants (4-2-1) will go for their fourth win in six games when they face the Eagles (2-6), who have lost six in a row.
The Giants were setting up a triumphant return for Skattebo in Philadelphia after his season ended in New York’s 38-20 loss to the Eagles in 2025. But it was not to be.
Skattebo, who has a team-high 418 rushing yards, strained his hamstring on the penultimate play of the Giants’ 27-21 overtime win over the Houston Texans in Week 7.
The Giants had their bye in Week 8 and hoped the running back would be available in time for Week 9. But he did not practice this week and was listed as doubtful, though Giants coach John Harbaugh left the door open for Skattebo to play.
“Let’s keep (the door) open,” Harbaugh said Friday. “Let’s see what happens.”
Devin Singletary will be the team’s starting running back and will be backed up by Greg Desrosiers and Phil Mafah, neither of whom has a carry in the NFL this season.
The six other inactive Giants are healthy scratches.
Charlie Jones, the Giants’ return specialist and No. 4 wide receiver, was active after managing a thumb injury during the week. Malik Nabers, who was named NFC Offensive Player of the Month for October, did not have an injury designation, as expected.
Hood was inactive because the Giants’ top four cornerbacks were healthy for the first time since Week 1. Paulson Adebo, Greg Newsome II, Deonte Banks and Dru Phillips will face the Eagles’ struggling passing game, which will be led by reserve quarterback Joe Milton.
Newsome, who signed a three-year contract extension during the bye, missed the win in Houston with a concussion. Adebo returned against the Texans after missing four games with a knee injury.
