Giants cut ties with Darius Slayton in unexpected move

The New York Giants are coming up on their big debut with new head coach John Harbaugh, and changes are happening at a lightning-fast pace. On Monday, amid the Labor Day holiday, one more change to this roster took place, and this one was a shocker.

During the late afternoon on Monday, the Giants announced that they're officially releasing longtime wide receiver Darius Slayton. According to ESPN, he's the team's longest-tenured player.

"Slayton was set to make $13 million in 2026, which would have been his eighth with the Giants," ESPN reports.

So, how was Slayton performing? Last season, he notched 37 receptions, totaling 538 yards and a touchdown. He appeared in 14 games last season, too. It was certainly a down year for him, and those aren't super numbers for a starting wide receiver, but it's still a shocker that the team made this move, considering his long history with the franchise.

The Giants selected Slayton in the fifth round of the 2019 draft. He's notched 296 receptions, 4,435 yards and 22 touchdowns during his time with the Giants, according to ESPN.

So, will other teams be interested in Slayton? Absolutely. What makes this deal really sweet for another team is that because they don't have to trade for him, another NFL team can just sign him to a low-risk deal. Good wideouts are always a great benefit to their team, so Slayton really shouldn't have a hard time finding a new home. The question is only about how long it will take.
