Giants' Daniel Jones addresses team's draft, Week 1 status

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones labeled himself as ready to go for Week 1 of the regular season as he works his way back from last year's torn ACL. The 26-year-old also commented on the Giants' reported pursuit of signal-caller Drake Maye in April, who ended up being selected third overall by the New England Patriots during the NFL Draft.

Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News was among those in attendance for both the team's Organized Team Activities (OTAs) and Jones' news conference on Thursday. Leonard pointed out that the current backup to Danny Dimes (Drew Lock) had a "rough" practice.

ESPN's Adam Schefter said in late April that Big Blue wasn't actually seeking a replacement for Jones during the draft but both ESPN's Jordan Raanan and Mike Reiss reported the opposite the next day. The latter two insiders wrote that New York wanted to trade up with New England to acquire Maye, who was the 2022 ACC Offensive Player of the Year.

One month prior to the draft, the Giants agreed to a one-year, $5M contract with Lock.

Jones is two years removed from a career-best 2022 campaign, during which he produced 22 total touchdowns (seven rushing) against just five interceptions and posted a career-high 92.5 passer rating. Jones signed a massive four-year, $160M contract extension in March 2023 but struggled mightily last season.

The 2019 first-round pick missed Weeks 6, 7 and 8 due to a neck injury and then suffered his season-ending ACL injury during his return to action in Week 9. Jones finished his fifth season with a career-high 67.5 completion percentage but just 909 passing yards, two touchdowns, six interceptions and a career-worst 70.5 passer rating.

Lock spent the first three years of his career with the Denver Broncos from 2019-21 before being traded to the Seattle Seahawks in March 2022 as part of the Russell Wilson blockbuster deal. He's registered a 59.7% completion percentage for 5,283 passing yards, 28 touchdowns and 23 interceptions across 28 games (23 starts).
