Giants' Darius Slayton addresses uncertain future, role with Giants

A recent report had surprisingly revealed that veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton may not make the New York Giants' initial 53-man roster. 

First-year Giants head coach John Harbaugh ultimately decided to keep Slayton through at least the start of September. While speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Slayton addressed being on the roster bubble throughout camp.

"Nothing really," Slayton responded when asked what he thought about the speculation related to his future, per the Giants' website. "It's not the first time, probably won't be the last time. But I really don't pay it too much of mind, honestly. I just take it day by day."

Giants general manager Joe Schoen signed Slayton to a three-year contract in March 2025. The Giants later fired then-head coach Brian Daboll last fall, and it's now no secret that Harbaugh is the franchise's true head of football operations. 

Last season, then-rookie Jaxson Dart took over as the Giants quarterback after Week 3. Meanwhile, Slayton tallied 37 receptions for 538 yards and one touchdown over 14 games. 

According to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, "Slayton seemed to become an afterthought in quarterback progressions and targets and in usage" throughout the summer. That said, the Giants seemingly still don't know if WR1 Malik Nabers will play in Week 1 as he works to fully recover from the torn ACL and torn meniscus he suffered on Sept. 28, 2025.

Thus, now may not be a good time for Harbaugh to take a familiar target away from Dart. 

"Just another playmaker," Slayton said about his fit among Giants receivers as part of a new-look offense. "I feel like we have a bunch in the room, a lot of really talented guys that we've added to the roster. I see myself as one of those guys and whatever capacity that I can be."

The previously mentioned report could lead one to believe that Harbaugh was ready to part ways with Slayton. On Tuesday, Slayton was asked what he has thus far learned about the Super Bowl champion coach. 

"He's a stickler for the details," Slayton said about Harbaugh. "He has an appetite for excellence, and that's what he expects out of everybody, coaches and players alike. So, I think that's definitely something that he's enforced from the first day he's been here and enforced throughout camp." 

It appears that Slayton will have an opportunity to prove his worth to Harbaugh this fall. However, Harbaugh could potentially look to move on from Slayton ahead of the trade deadline if the Giants lose more than they win through the end of October.
