New York Giants tight end Darren Waller spoke Monday regarding Las Vegas Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels leaking details about Waller marrying Kelsey Plum of the WNBA's Las Vegas Aces earlier this year.
"Honestly, I feel like it was a misunderstanding," Waller said during an appearance on the WFAN "Boomer and Gio" program, per Logan Mullen of Audacy. "Because I told him about it and I feel like there wasn’t any malice in how it came out."
It was reported shortly after Waller joined the Giants via a trade from the Raiders in March that the 30-year-old and McDaniels had a falling out after the coach "accidentally" revealed information about the previously-mentioned wedding that hadn't yet been made public during the combine. Jordan Raanan of ESPN reported in May that "there was a point of contention when Waller left [the Raiders] during the bye week [last season] to propose...instead of rehabbing and didn't provide the team an explanation of where he was going."
Waller explained during Monday's interview what actually happened.
"You’re mandated Thursday to Sunday off [during the bye week], right? I pulled my hamstring in the [Week 5 Kansas City Chiefs game], and I knew there was no way I was playing in [our next] game," Waller said. "And also, there’s no way you’re going to stop me from proposing to my wife. I went to them and in secrecy, I was like I don’t want to share this information, I want to keep it private, I don’t want it to get out. Eventually, it did. I know he didn’t do it to mess up my day."
Waller acknowledged back in June he was "not totally shocked" about being traded from the Raiders to the Giants because he "had heard some things." He now is on track to serve as the primary target for New York quarterback Daniel Jones assuming Waller can stay healthy, as injuries limited the one-time Pro Bowl selection to just 20 regular-season games over the past two campaigns.
