Giants' Day 3 Pick Receiving Significant Praise

For the second year in a row, New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen has passed the NFL Draft test with flying colors. Perhaps he was in line for an easy “A” when he took a blue-chip prospect in edge rusher Abdul Carter and traded up for a potential franchise quarterback before the end of Round 1.

It was the depth of the Giants’ class, though, that won over the football world. Despite trading two 2025 Day 2 picks (and a 2026 third-round selection) for quarterback Jaxson Dart, Schoen came away with multiple plug-and-play starters, Dart, and some of the best value selections the class had to offer.

Among them was running back Cam Skattebo, whom New York drafted early in the fourth round. He won’t immediately slide in as a starter like 2024 fourth-round pick Theo Johnson did at tight end, but there’s a real path to playing time. With his physicality and competitive toughness, he could quickly become a big part of the offense’s plans.

As such, the Giants have continued receiving praise for picking a potential starter on Day 3.

“I put Skattebo with the Giants in my seven-round mock (six spots earlier than he was actually picked) because his power and short-area agility make him a tough guy to tackle,” Chad Reuter wrote. “To me, he's the most explosive runner on the roster. He's also a threat as a receiver and will stay fresh if regularly rotating with Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary .”

Reuter suggests it’ll be a three-headed monster for New York, but Skattebo projects to be an incredible stylistic complement to Tracy. Singletary, who was largely demoted to short-yardage situations after Tracy took the starting job, could reasonably get pushed out of the game plan.

Skattebo is bigger, stronger, and offers more in the passing game, meaning his technique just has to be passable to make an impact.

According to Pro Football Focus, Skattebo’s ability to break tackles made him one of the top running backs in an impressive class.

“Skattebo was RB3 and the No. 51 overall player on the PFF Big Board, making this a strong value pick for the Giants at the top of the fourth round,” Pro Football Focus said of the running back. “He doesn’t have elite speed, but he excels in many areas that translate well to the NFL. Skattebo ranked above the 85th percentile in PFF rushing grade in both gap and zone schemes in 2024 and was the only running back besides Ashton Jeanty to force more than 100 missed tackles on the ground last season.”

Skattebo gives the Giants a refreshing sense of physicality, and his motor seems to leak from every quote he gives. He’s easy to put on the field, even easier to root for, and a solid bet to see significant playing time in 2025.
