Giants Dodge Huge Bullet With Cam Skattebo Viral Moment

New York Giants fans have always loved players who put their bodies second while trying to win.

But it's getting to the point where Big Blue faithful need to hold their collective breath when they hear Cam Skattebo's name in a news report.

Skattebo luckily survived a near self-inflicted injury where he failed to land a back flip in a viral video and said he was "fine" at Fanatics Fest at the Javits Center this weekend.

The running back, who only returned as a full participant at Giants minicamp last month after sustaining a season-ending injury in Philadelphia last year, is slated to be their starter if he's healthy enough to do so.

Cam Skattebo Laughed Off a Botched Backflip at Fanatics Fest

Skattebo may have first- or second-round skills, but he is proving he has the brain of a seventh-rounder.

So when Skattebo failed to land the backflip Saturday -- the second-such backflip of this offseason -- it sent Giants fans into fear and delirium.

"I’m gonna address the elephant [in the room],” Skattebo said during a panel event at Fanatics Fest on Sunday while sitting next to Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart. “I will not hurt myself before the season.”

It was on a similar stage that Skattebo tested out his leg with a backflip, yet failed to stick the landing that led to him falling backward. However, he popped right up and began clapping his hands, proving he was all right.

Skattebo, of course, did the backflip as a post-score celebration during his rookie season. Still, this isn't the first backflip of his offseason, since first-year Giants coach John Harbaugh has already issued a no backflips rule.

Skattebo isn't going to stop, though.

"I'm just going to keep being me," he said. "If they want to say I'm brain-dead, and I don't have no brain, then who cares, f--- it."

Cam Skattebo Needs to Be Smarter

Ultimately, the botched backflip wasn't that big of a deal. Skattebo is clearly healthy enough to participate in practice and will be a full participant when camp opens in West Virginia later this month.

The problem with Skattebo is his recent flip continues a trend of reckless behavior that seems likely to get him reinjured.

He was in the ring at a WWE event three weeks after breaking his ankle. He put his foot in his mouth about CTE and has been a bit too backflip happy for much of Giants nation.

So you can chalk his offseason up to youthful exuberance, and we've all been 24 before and made bad decisions.

But Skattebo won't be the toast of New York if he's injured, and he already plays too hard to stay healthy for long. He can't be putting himself further into harm's way off the field.
