Giants Eyeing C Addition

In the case of the Giants, an addition up front could be coming soon. Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post reports the team is in the market for a center. A total of five offensive linemen were either waived or released yesterday as part of the Giants’ moves down to 53 players. Of course, some of them could be back in the fold shortly.

Alternatively, New York could look to outside options in a bid to acquire center depth. Several players became free agents through a release over the course of the weekend or are currently available through waivers. Claims for players currently on the wire will be processed today.

As things stand, John Michael Schmitz is on track for another season as the Giants’ starting center. The former second-rounder has occupied that role for each of his three NFL campaigns. Per Dunleavy, New York is believed to be targeting a potential “challenger” to Schmitz atop the depth chart in time for Week 1.

After receiving the lowest PFF grade for qualifying centers during his rookie season, Schmitz saw an incremental improvement. Nevertheless, the 27-year-old has continued to be rated as one of the league’s worst starters at that position. 2026 represents the final season of Schmitz’s rookie contract, so his level of play over the coming months will be key in determining his future.

The waiver claim priority is set by April’s draft order, meaning the Giants are fifth in the queue to add players currently on the wire. New York also has roughly $10MM in cap space if a free agent center is to be pursued by GM Joe Schoen and Co. leading up to Week 1.
