The New York Giants' offense has desperately needed help at wide receiver since losing star playmaker Malik Nabers. With the trade deadline looming, Giants fans are hoping to see the franchise trade for a big name to boost the group.

With a trade still on the table, New York added a quality option to the practice squad. Per Art Stapleton of USA Today, the Giants are signing former Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud after he was released yesterday.

Giants sign Ray-Ray McCloud

McCloud is a traveled and experienced 29-year-old veteran in the NFL, with eight seasons on his resume across five different franchises. In 2018, he was drafted out of Clemson in the sixth round by the Buffalo Bills. For most of his career, McCloud was a reserve player who contributed sparingly in spurts.

2024 was his most productive season in the league, totalling 62 receptions for 686 yards and one touchdown. The 5'9", 185lb receiver has a total of 1,518 yards, 158 receptions, and two touchdowns. There was a brief overlap with McCloud in Buffalo when Giants head coach Brian Daboll was the offensive coordinator.

The Falcons recently released McCloud amid an undisclosed, strange situation. Per ESPN, McCloud was sent home last week for a personal matter after he was a healthy scratch for their Monday Night Football win over the Buffalo Bills in Week 6. Overall, McCloud's role was significantly diminished this season, with most of their star weapons available and healthy.

Ultimately, the Giants are not getting an impactful, game-changing receiver with McCloud. Assuming everything is cleared up with his unclear personal matter, he won't emerge as a primary weapon in the offense. He does at least supply depth at the receiver position when they were aggressively depleted. After losing Nabers, the team also hasn't had Darius Slayton available.

Currently, the receiving production has been troubling for the Giants. Leading the unit is Wan'Dale Robinson, who's stepped up with 446 yards and two touchdowns. After that, they only have one other active receiver with over 100 yards, that being Slayton with 166.

The McCloud signing really doesn't do much to boost the pass game if he were to be activated to the team's 53-man roster at some point in the future. The only way the Giants can realistically elevate the position is by trading for an impactful and productive receiver on the trade block.
