Giants GM Joe Schoen not actively looking to trade RB Saquon Barkley

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen raised eyes at the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this month when he suggested he was open to trading running back and 2018 second-overall draft pick Saquon Barkley, who is in the last year of his rookie contract and will earn a guaranteed $7.217 million for the 2022 season.

Per Jordan Raanan of ESPN, Schoen attempted to clarify the team's stance regarding the 2018 Offensive Rookie of the Year who has battled multiple injury woes over the past several campaigns while speaking at the league's annual meetings on Monday.

"That was taken a little bit out of context at the combine. I haven't called one team on Saquon Barkley," Schoen explained. "Everybody ran with that from the combine. I said I would listen if people called on any players. It would be irresponsible if I didn't. That doesn't mean I'm going to do every deal. So I haven't called one team on Saquon Barkley.

"I've got calls about a few of our players. He's one where a couple teams have reached out. But I'm not shopping Saquon Barkley."

Schoen added that he phoned Barkley following what became buzzworthy comments at the combine to assure him about the team's intentions.

"Again, it would be irresponsible for the team if a team calls -- I think 31 other GMs would say the same thing -- if somebody is going to call and offer you something ridiculous, you're going to listen. It doesn't mean you're going to make a deal or say yes to it," Schoen said.

There is currently zero indication the Giants are considering signing Barkley to an extension, and the team recently added veteran ball-carrier Matt Breida. Breida played under Giants head coach Brian Daboll when both were with the Buffalo Bills.

Barkley finished last season with 593 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 162 carries across 13 games. He also contributed 41 catches for 263 yards and a pair of scores.
