Jaxson Dart was one of the most polarizing quarterback prospects in this year's class. While he looked a bit raw, he showcased the potential to be one of the best signal-callers in a somewhat underwhelming class.
The New York Giants traded up to take him with the No. 25 pick, and he's turned plenty of heads since he's arrived in the Big Apple.
Nevertheless, despite his impressive performance in the preseason, the Giants still don't want to rush anything with him. Per The Athletic's Dan Duggan, they still intend him to sit for a long while, potentially for the whole season.
"If all goes according to plan, Thursday night’s preseason finale against the New England Patriots will be Jaxson Dart’s last game action for a long time," wrote Duggan. "The New York Giants want their rookie quarterback to develop behind the scenes while veteran Russell Wilson leads an improved roster this season."
The insider reports that the Giants haven't figured out their QB depth chart yet, and while Russell Wilson will be the undisputed starter, the QB2 spot is still up for grabs, with Dart still having a chance to beat Jameis Winston for it:
"It’s not even clear yet if Dart will serve as the No. 2 quarterback when the Giants travel to Washington on Sept. 7 for the regular season opener. While Daboll has repeatedly declared Wilson as the unquestioned starter from the moment Dart was drafted, the backup role has been open," Duggan continued.
Dart has gotten the bulk of the second-team reps throughout training camp, and he's looked like a promising prospect in his first taste of NFL action.
In two preseason games, he's completed 26 of 35 passes for 291 yards, two touchdowns, and no turnovers. He also rushed for another score.
