Giants interested in Mitchell Trubisky?

Before current Buffalo Bills backup quarterback and 2017 first-round draft pick Mitchell Trubisky made it clear he'd like a chance to compete for a starting job outside of Buffalo later this year, some linked him with the New York Giants for understandable reasons.

Giants general manager Joe Schoen previously served as Buffalo assistant general manager before Big Blue hired him last month, and Schoen turned to then-Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll to be his head coach. Add in that 2019 first-round draft pick Daniel Jones may have the fifth-year option attached to his rookie contract declined, and the math for Trubisky joining the Giants checks out.

Now, another individual has connected the figurative dots, as Zack Rosenblatt of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com wrote for a piece published Thursday that "the possibility of Trubisky coming to New York and backing up Daniel Jones shouldn’t be ruled out."

Interestingly, Rosenblatt explained that Trubisky offered noteworthy praise for Daboll last year and that Daboll has also spoken highly of the 27-year-old in the past. With Jones potentially not cleared for contact until August as he works to fully recover from the neck injury that prematurely ended his 2021 campaign, logic suggests Schoen and Daboll wouldn't mind paying a little extra cash to have a familiar face penciled in atop the depth chart later this year.

"Trubisky is clearly good enough to push Jones for playing time, if not in training camp then he’d at least loom large if Jones struggled," Rosenblatt wrote.

While speaking with reporters last month, both Schoen and Daboll suggested they'd give Jones a shot to remain QB1 during his first year under their charge, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't let "Danny Dimes" potentially lose the starting job by Sept. 1.
