Giants' John Harbaugh shares surprising Jaxson Dart injury update

A Wednesday report revealed that New York Giants starting quarterback Jaxson Dart needed "knee surgery that will lead to a full recovery but end his 2026 season." 

It appears that update may not have been entirely accurate. 

Could Jaxson Dart potentially play for Giants again before September 2027?

As shared by NFL insider Connor Hughes of SNY and others, first-year Giants head coach John Harbaugh said on multiple occasions while speaking with reporters on Wednesday afternoon that Dart is currently considered out only for the rest of the regular season. Per Harbaugh, the Giants aren't yet closing the door on Dart potentially playing if Big Blue makes the playoffs. 

As noted by Jordan Raanan of ESPN, Dart specifically suffered damage to his meniscus and MCL that left him needing surgery when he took a hit on the opening drive of the Giants' 28-6 loss at the Los Angeles Rams (1-1) this past Monday night. While Dart also has damage to his PCL, his ACL is intact. 

It's assumed Dart would definitely be out through the Super Bowl if he suffered an ACL injury. 

What are the Giants' QB plans with Jaxson Dart out indefinitely?

Per Dan Duggan of The Athletic, Harbaugh confirmed that backup Jameis Winston is the Giants' new QB1 through at least the team's Week 3 home game against the 0-2 Tennessee Titans this coming Sunday. However, Harbaugh also said that the Giants will add a different player, preferably a veteran, to their quarterback room at some point. Additionally, Harbaugh didn't rule out a possible trade for a signal-caller. 

Winston left analysts and Giants fans unimpressed when he went 11-of-27 passing for 111 yards with an interception and zero touchdown drives in his unplanned relief appearance against the Rams. Nevertheless, Harbaugh seems confident that Winston can produce a bounce-back performance against Tennessee.

"Well, he can throw it," Harbaugh said about Winston, per SNY. "He's a big, strong passing quarterback. He can throw the ball. Everybody that follows football has certainly seen Jameis play. His strengths are evident. So that's what you build around." 

Harbaugh also made it clear that his message to his players is that the season isn't over despite the loss of Dart. Shortly after Harbaugh spoke, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the 1-1 Giants as 2.5-point home favorites over the winless Titans.
