Giants legend Lawrence Taylor says he wouldn’t make it in today's NFL

Seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady made headlines not that long ago for his harsh criticism of the NFL and its “mediocrity” during an appearance on the “Stephen A. Smith Show.”

Former New York Giants linebacker and Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor seems to share Brady’s belief. During a recent interview with Brady on his “Let’s Go” podcast, Taylor admitted he doesn’t think he’d but cut out for the NFL with the way the game is played today.

“The game has changed a little bit, you know?” Taylor said. “Just a couple weeks ago I saw a running back (D'Andre Swift) get fined for trucking. What the hell is trucking? He got fined for running over the (defensive back). I don't understand that. The game has changed a little bit. I like the era that I played in because if I was playing nowadays, I probably wouldn't last the game.”

Taylor was known as one of the more violent defensive players in the NFL during his 13-year career. Over that span, he was a 10-time All-Pro selection and Pro Bowler, a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, a league MVP, NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, and he won two Super Bowls.

He’s also presumably most remembered for his gruesome tackle on former Washington Commanders quarterback Joe Theismann on Nov. 18, 1985, in which he broke the tibia and fibula in Theismann’s right leg.

Taylor believes his aggressive nature and full-throttle style of play likely wouldn’t fly in today’s game, where referees have cracked down on several personal foul penalties, including roughing the passer and unnecessary roughness — two flags Taylor would have likely drawn repeatedly.

“It'd been hard for me to play," Taylor added. "I may have ended the season owing them money.”
