The New York Giants offense has caught fire the past four weeks but have had an uneven first half of the season.
Of course, injuries are to blame. But there’s been a lot of good offensive play for Giants fans. In the spirit of our weekly game grades, here are the offensive game grades from the first seven weeks.
Jaxson Dart was awesome in the only game he both started and finished, but his torn MCL and meniscus put the position in flux.
Jameis Winston was largely effective in his four starts, in which he went 2-1-1. But J.J. McCarthy took over, nearly dragged the Giants back from a 24-point deficit in their loss to the Saints and looks like the Giants’ solution at QB.
Cam Skattebo has been hot and cold and ended the first seven weeks on the upswing by posting 124 yards and a touchdown in the Giants’ 27-21 overtime win over the Texans.
Otherwise, the position has been a drain on the Giants’ offense, with Devin Singletary, Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Najee Harris combining for 234 yards on 68 carries (3.4 yards per carry). There’s a reason the Giants are shopping for upgrades at running back.
Malik Nabers has been the Giants’ MVP and an NFL Comeback Player of the Year candidate. Plus, Malachi Fields looks like a bona fide No. 2 receiver, especially after his breakout four-catch, 83-yard performance against Houston.
Charlie Jones has been good as both a receiver and special teamer, and his production has helped offset the zero contribution from Odell Beckham Jr.
Darnell Mooney has done barely more with only 145 all-purpose yards this season.
Isaiah Likely has been a revelation, finally realizing his potential while balling out, especially when Winston was at quarterback. He is one catch shy of tying his career high, and he needs 82 receiving yards for his single-season best.
Thomas Fidone II had one catch that set up Winston’s 1-yard touchdown in Houston, and Theo Johnson has when healthy been a solid blocker and caught an 11-yard touchdown in the Giants’ come-from-behind win over Arizona.
The Giants offensive line has allowed the fifth-most sacks (21), and their run game hasn’t gotten unlocked yet. But the Giants offensive line has largely been good, holding up while the immobile Winston had to throw 26 or more times in each of his four starts.
The O-line needs to be better for the Giants to win the NFC East. But it has earned a passing grade so far.
