Giants QB Daniel Jones (neck) likely out vs. Chargers; Jake Fromm could start?

New York Giants starting quarterback Daniel Jones missed Sunday's 20-9 loss at the Miami Dolphins with a strained neck he suffered in the win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Nov. 28, and whispers echoed by WFAN personality Craig Carton suggest Jones could be done for the rest of the season:

New York head coach Joe Judge hasn't yet publicly ruled Jones out through Jan. 9, but ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the 2019 first-round draft pick will likely sit through at least this coming Sunday's matchup at the Los Angeles Chargers.

After further visits with Giants doctors and specialists to have his neck injury evaluated, QB Daniel Jones is unlikely to play Sunday vs. Chargers, per sources. Team hopes Jones won’t miss much more time, but Jake Fromm, signed off Buffalo’s PS, could be in line to start Sunday.

As Josh Alper noted for Pro Football Talk, backup and fill-in starter Mike Glennon is in the concussion protocol coming off Sunday's defeat, and his status for the Chargers contest is up in the air. As of Monday evening, unproven commodity Jake Fromm is atop New York's depth chart at the sport's most important position.

The Giants signed Fromm off the practice squad of the Buffalo Bills last week. A fifth-round selection in the 2020 draft, Fromm has never thrown a pass in a meaningful NFL game.

The Giants now sit at 4-8 but still need to evaluate Jones before determining what to do about the fifth-year option attached to his rookie contract. He can't play if he's not cleared, however, and it seems he'll have a maximum of only four additional opportunities to start this season.
