Giants QB Tommy DeVito shares Daniel Jones' reaction to sudden rise

New York Giants rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito spoke with reporters on Wednesday and shared how Week 1 starter Daniel Jones has continued to serve as a mentor amid DeVito becoming an undrafted fan-favorite. 

"When he's around, when he's done doing his rehab, and he's either in here or in the quarterback room, I'm always picking his brain, just having a conversation," DeVito said about Jones, per the Giants' website. 

Primary backup Tyrod Taylor was already sidelined with an injury when Jones went down with a season-ending torn ACL on Nov. 5. DeVito lost his first NFL start playing in Jones' place but has since guided the Giants to three straight wins. The New Jersey native seemingly has replaced Jones in the hearts of some local supporters. 

As noted by Ryan Chichester of Audacy, WFAN radio host Evan Roberts suggested on Tuesday that Jones is "very worried" watching DeVito's rise as the 26-year-old recovers from a serious setback. DeVito indicated on Wednesday that's not at all the case. 

"He's probably always the first text on my phone right after the game ends," DeVito said about Jones. "I usually see him in here the next morning sitting, getting treatment. So, we're always talking and he's always the first one." 

Before he underwent knee surgery, Jones praised DeVito's confidence and work ethic, traits that have helped the 25-year-old achieve success as a QB1 in the country's largest sports market after he began his debut pro season as a practice-squad option. DeVito touched upon some of the advice he's received from Jones over the past month. 

"It's just staying composed throughout the whole thing," DeVito said about what he's learned from Jones. "It's kind of the same deal it's always been in college and everything else. When everything's going good, everybody loves you, and when you don't win, everything is—people don't like you, right? It's always, somebody's talking this and that about you. So, staying even-keeled through it all." 

Jones knows plenty about the ups and downs that come with being a pro athlete in the New York market considering home fans chanted his name less than 12 months ago after he helped the Giants clinch a playoff berth. Much may be said early next year about DeVito possibly replacing Jones on a full-time basis, but it sounds like the 2019 first-round draft pick is currently doing all he can to help the rookie keep the 5-8 Giants in the playoff hunt ahead of this coming Sunday's game at the 6-7 New Orleans Saints.
